State Police Arrest 177 Drivers for DWI During Super Bowl Weekend Crackdown

New York State Police arrested 177 drivers for DWI and issued more than 8,000 tickets during a statewide traffic enforcement campaign over Super Bowl weekend.

The special STOP-DWI initiative ran from Friday, February 6 through Sunday, February 8. During that time, troopers increased patrols and set up sobriety checkpoints across the state to deter and catch impaired drivers. The campaign was funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and carried out together with local law enforcement agencies.

Troopers also investigated 822 crashes statewide, including one fatal crash. State Police reported a total of 8,263 tickets issued during the enforcement period. 

Of those, 1,380 tickets were issued on the New York State Thruway alone.

Enforcement focused not only on impaired driving but also on other risky behavior behind the wheel. Ticket totals included 2,395 for speeding, 287 for distracted driving, 267 for seatbelt violations, and 115 for violations of the Move Over Law.

By comparison, last year’s Super Bowl weekend enforcement effort resulted in 8,663 tickets and 161 DWI arrests.

State Police said these targeted campaigns are aimed at reducing preventable crashes and keeping roads safer during high-traffic weekends.
