Operation Hard Hat: 400 Tickets Issued in Work Zones

New York State Police have issued 400 tickets in and around active work zones since April as part of Operation Hard Hat, an ongoing enforcement effort aimed at protecting roadside workers and cracking down on unsafe driving.
Members of State Police Troop L’s Traffic Incident Management Unit have been conducting the enforcement details in partnership with the New York State Department of Transportation at active NYSDOT work zones.
Speeding accounted for the largest share of specific violations, with troopers issuing 181 speeding tickets. Another 24 motorists were ticketed for cell phone or texting violations, while 23 tickets were issued for traffic control device violations.
Troopers also issued 19 tickets for violations of New York’s Move Over Law and 12 for seat belt violations. An additional 145 tickets were issued for other moving and nonmoving violations.
State Police said the enforcement effort serves as a reminder that work zones are active workplaces, urging motorists to slow down, remain alert, obey signs and traffic control personnel, put their phones away, and move over when required by law.
“Roadside workers deserve to make it home safely at the end of every shift,” State Police said, urging motorists to drive responsibly through work zones.
