High-ranking officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons visited Kiryas Yoel this afternoon, following a visit by the Rebbe to the Otisville federal prison last month. During that visit, the Rebbe extended an invitation to the officials to tour the community and learn more.
The delegation toured several locations in the town, including Eishes Chayil, the Mesivta, Beis Rachel school, and the local Kollel, among other places. These stops gave the officials an inside look at the institutions that support the community, allowing them to see up close the vibrant Jewish life in all its many facets.
Among those in attendance, the main guest was Erik Rickard, Warden of the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Otisville in New York, joined by his assistants, prison chaplains, and representatives of the Tzedek Association, who were also invited to participate in the visit.
At the yeshiva, the visitors were welcomed with speeches in their honor, setting the tone for a respectful and meaningful encounter. The group then visited the mikvah, where the significance of having proper mikvah facilities available to Jewish inmates was explained. From there, they toured the large community kitchen, which serves thousands of meals daily, and discussed the importance and logistics of providing good kosher food in the prison system.
In Beis Rachel, thousands of students sat with visible respect and attentiveness, a scene that deeply impressed the guests. At Eishes Chayil, a respected kimpeturin home supporting mothers after childbirth, the delegation saw firsthand the warmth, care, and comprehensive services provided to families during this important stage.
During their visit to the Kollel, the officials were struck by the sight of thousands of sefarim in active use and noted the complete absence of digital books or technological devices in the study hall. In that moment, they gained insight into how Jewish minds are shaped and educated through Torah learning, and how the successful outcomes of this system are clearly reflected in the community.
As they toured the broader area, the delegation also observed the dedication and professionalism of local emergency services, including Hatzolah and Matzilei Eish, and saw dozens of buses transporting children, underscoring the size and energy of the community.
At the conclusion of the visit, the officials met with the Rebbe and shared how deeply the tour had impacted them. The Rebbe spoke at length about various projects and ideas to better accommodate Jewish inmates and ease their burden. They expressed appreciation for the Rebbe’s outreach and projects on behalf of incarcerated Jews and indicated a willingness to remain in contact with community askanim on matters affecting Jewish inmates.
