Attention All Contractors: South Blooming Grove Announces New Mailbox Requirements for New Construction

The Village of South Blooming Grove has announced new USPS mailbox requirements for future construction projects, requiring developers and contractors to coordinate mailbox locations with the U.S. Postal Service before installation.

The village also said that it is currently working closely with the local USPS office to address ongoing mailbox and mail delivery issues throughout the village, while also trying to create an arrangement that would allow existing mailbox locations to remain in place.

Going forward, however, new construction projects will be required to follow USPS guidelines. Buildings containing four or more residential units must have a centralized mailbox station with a canopy installed above the mailboxes.

For projects involving multiple buildings in the same area that are not required to share one centralized mailbox station, each building may have its own designated station. USPS is strongly recommending, however, that a shared mailbox station be installed whenever possible, as it makes it more practical for delivery services, and is strongly encouraged, even when the buildings have different owners or contractors.

The most important new requirement is that before any mailbox location or layout is finalized, contractors will be required to schedule a site visit with USPS and receive approval for the proposed mailbox location and configuration.

The village warned that contractors who fail to complete the required site visit and obtain approval before installation could cause USPS to refuse mail delivery to the building, even after residents have moved in.

Contractors are therefore being urged to coordinate directly with USPS and complete the required site visit before moving forward with any mailbox installation.

The village also announced that it has arranged a drive-through inspection with USPS representatives next week to review several locations throughout South Blooming Grove and work toward practical solutions for existing and future mailbox setups, as well to address ongoing delivery concerns.
