Rescue Operation Successfully Extracts Fall Victim from Popolopen Gorge

By Daily Monroe Staff

At approximately 5:30 PM yesterday afternoon, the Fort Montgomery Fire Department responded to a distress call for a fall victim at the Popolopen Gorge, right near Bear Mountains.

Upon arrival, emergency units discovered an individual who had fallen from a considerable height and sustained serious injuries.

Given the challenging terrain and remote location of the victim, responders swiftly initiated a rope rescue operation. Teams from multiple agencies collaborated to establish a safe and effective extraction plan. After a meticulous effort, the patient was successfully lifted to safety and subsequently transferred to advanced medical care via MEDIVAC at the Bear Mountain Bridge.

The FMFD expressed deep gratitude to the various agencies whose collaborative efforts were instrumental in the successful rescue operation. Among those involved were: Orange County BC 36-14, West Point Fire Department, Highland Falls Fire Department, Town of Highlands EMS, New Windsor Paramedics, New York State Park Police, New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Police, Town of Highlands Police, Highland Falls Police. Life Net Air-2 and the New York State DOT H.E.L.P. Trucks.
