Over 12,000 Tickets Issued by New York State Police During Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown
By Daily Monroe Staff
New York State Police wrapped up their Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign with more than 12,000 tickets issued across the state, marking an increase from last year’s total.
The targeted crackdown ran from May 23 through May 26, aiming to reduce impaired and distracted driving during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Troopers conducted DWI patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and monitored for drivers using handheld devices.
By the end of the four-day operation, troopers had issued a total of 12,062 tickets, including 245 DWI arrests and investigations into 774 motor vehicle crashes, three of which were fatal.
Here’s a breakdown of ticket totals by region:
- New York State Thruway – 2,128
- Eastern Hudson Valley – 1,233
- Western Hudson Valley – 1,253
- North Country – 1,444
- Finger Lakes – 1,175
- Capital Region – 1,078
- Western New York – 1,032
- Central New York – 996
- Southern Tier – 936
- Long Island – 587
- New York City – 500
Compared to last year’s campaign, which saw 10,949 tickets and 225 DWI arrests, this year’s numbers reflect a continued effort by law enforcement to ensure road safety during high-traffic periods.
Officials say such initiatives are critical in preventing crashes and saving lives, especially during weekends when celebrations often lead to riskier behavior behind the wheel.
