Nightly Lane Closures on the Thruway in Newburgh for Bridge Work This Week

By Yisroel R.

Drivers traveling on the Thruway in Orange County this week should expect delays as major overnight work begins on the Meadow Hill Road bridge in Newburgh. Starting Monday night, crews will install 14 steel girders for the new bridge, with nightly lane closures and multiple traffic stops through Thursday, weather permitting.

The left lane will be closed in both directions from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. near Exit 17, and State Police will stop traffic several times after 11 p.m. so workers can safely lift the steel into place. Each stop is expected to last up to 20 minutes. Motorists are urged to give themselves extra travel time and slow down in the work zone.

The project is part of a $7.8 million effort to replace the Meadow Hill Road bridge, which is being rebuilt with wider lanes, new shoulders, a sidewalk, and increased clearance over the Thruway to reduce the risk of bridge strikes. The new structure is designed to last 75 years and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.

Electronic signs and traffic alerts will update drivers throughout the week. Officials remind motorists to follow posted work-zone speed limits and obey New York’s Move Over Law to protect workers and emergency crews along the roadway.
