Nest Platform Installed Atop Bear Mountain Bridge To Prevent Falling Debris
By Yisroel R.
The New York State Bridge Authority announced that a new bird nest platform has been installed atop the Bear Mountain Bridge to prevent branches and debris from falling onto the roadway below.
In recent years, large birds have repeatedly attempted to build nests at the top of the bridge tower, which spans between Cortlandt in Westchester County and Bear Mountain State Park in Orange County. The nesting activity led to sticks and branches dropping onto the bridge deck, creating potential hazards for passing vehicles.
Previously, maintenance crews had to climb the tower and remove the nests when possible. This year, instead of dismantling nests, the Bear Mountain Bridge Maintenance Crew constructed a dedicated nesting platform at the top of the structure.
Bridge Authority officials said the custom-built platform gives the birds a designated place to nest while reducing the risk of debris falling onto traffic below.
