Lake Sebago Beach Is Coming Back to Harriman State Park After More Than a Decade
By Y.M. Lowy
After being closed for over 10 years, Lake Sebago Beach at Harriman State Park is finally coming back. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that a big construction contract has been approved, moving forward the long-awaited rebuild of this popular summer spot in the Hudson Valley.
The beach was destroyed by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and has stayed closed since. Now, the project will bring swimming back to Lake Sebago as part of the state’s NY SWIMS program, which helps more New Yorkers have safe places to cool off in the summer.
When it reopens, Lake Sebago Beach will be a full summer destination. There will be new sand, a long walkway along the lake, two new playgrounds, picnic and game areas, and space for thousands of visitors each day. The old bathhouse will be fixed up with new restrooms, and large parking areas will make it easier for families to get there.
The beach and surrounding areas will be able to handle big storms and a natural creek and wetlands will help manage flooding. Solar panels and spots for electric vehicle charging will also be added.
Construction is set to start in spring 2026, with the new beach expected to open by summer 2027. For many New Yorkers, that means a favorite beach that first opened in the 1950s will finally be back, ready for a new generation to enjoy.
