Governor Hochul Warns of Extreme Heat Across New York Starting Sunday

Governor Kathy Hochul has warned New Yorkers of a dangerous heat wave expected to impact much of the state starting Sunday, with “feels-like” temperatures reaching 100–110 degrees through at least Wednesday. Overnight temperatures will stay unseasonably high, especially in urban areas, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

State agencies are preparing cooling centers and working with local governments to protect vulnerable populations. The Department of Public Service is coordinating with utility companies to prevent power outages, and the Health Department is issuing guidance to hospitals, care facilities, and event organizers.

The extreme heat also has implications for Primary Election Day on Tuesday, June 24. Voters are urged to take advantage of early voting or request an absentee ballot to avoid long waits in the heat.

Outdoor workers are advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding peak heat hours, and limiting outdoor activity. Additional safety measures are being implemented across public services, transportation systems, parks, and shelters.
