Governor Hochul Launches Statewide Campaign Against Bridge Strikes By Trucks

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a coordinated public awareness and enforcement campaign across New York aimed at preventing bridge strikes involving commercial vehicles and large trucks.
The “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right!” campaign runs from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, reminding drivers to know the height of their vehicles, obey low-clearance warnings, and use commercial-grade GPS systems when planning their routes.
State Police will increase patrols in areas with a history of bridge strikes, while electronic message boards across the state will display campaign reminders. Drivers who strike a bridge now face an eight-point violation under regulations introduced earlier this year.
New York recorded 310 bridge strikes in 2025, many involving truck operators who did not know their vehicle’s height or ignored posted restrictions. These incidents are especially common on parkways and roads with low-clearance railroad bridges in New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley, and Long Island.
Commercial trucks are banned from New York’s parkways because many contain low stone-arch bridges. State officials are also urging drivers of rented box trucks and moving vehicles to carefully check their height and use the 511NY “Trucker Mode,” which identifies restricted bridges and routes before they begin traveling.
