Beware: Orange County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Jury Duty Scam
By Y.M. Lowy
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on the lookout for a jury duty scam that has been reported recently many times in the area.
Here’s how the scam works: Scammers call people at their workplaces pretending to be deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. They falsely claim the person missed jury duty in an attempt to scare them into giving out personal information or following their instructions.
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. Do not give them any personal or financial information.
If you’re ever unsure about your jury duty status, verify it only through the official New York juror website. The Sheriff’s Office also asks anyone who receives one of these scam calls to report it to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office or their local police department to help find the people involved.
For questions or to report the scam, residents can contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at 845-862-6329.
