After Hudson River Plane Incident, Orange County Stresses Emergency Preparedness
By Y.M. Lowy
Orange County officials are pointing to the county’s ongoing emergency preparedness efforts following a small aircraft incident earlier this week in the Hudson River. A small Cessna carrying a pilot and a student was forced to land in the river. Both safely evacuated the aircraft and no serious injuries were reported.
Officials say the incident serves as a reminder of why the county continues to invest in training, planning, and coordination between emergency agencies.
Less than a year ago, in June 2025, Orange County Emergency Management led a full-scale Emergency Operations Center exercise that simulated a Cessna aircraft crashing into the Hudson River. The drill brought together more than 60 local, state, and federal partners to test coordination between aviation authorities, law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and emergency management agencies.
County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said the recent incident shows why those exercises matter.
“This incident demonstrates the importance of preparation, training, and collaboration across all levels of government,” Neuhaus said. “I take public safety very seriously, and together with Orange County Emergency Management and county government, we remain committed to keeping residents safe through continued training, readiness drills, and strong partnerships.”
Orange County will continue working with municipal, state, and federal partners to maintain preparedness and protect residents and visitors throughout the Hudson Valley.
