After 50 Years Underground, Monroe’s Time Capsule Reveals Its Contents

By Y.M. Lowy

Fifty years after it was buried during the nation’s Bicentennial celebration, Monroe’s “Spirit of ‘76” time capsule was opened on July 4, fulfilling a promise made by residents in 1976 to unseal it during America’s 250th anniversary.

The capsule had been buried beneath the Mayor’s Monument at the corner of Lake Street and Route 17, where a large crowd gathered to witness the historic moment. Monroe Mayor Alex Melchiorre welcomed attendees before community members of all ages helped dig up the capsule.

The opening marked the conclusion of a project that had remained untouched for half a century. As a volunteer cut open the metal container, however, years underground had taken their toll. Water poured out of the capsule, revealing that many of its contents had been heavily damaged.

Inside were newspapers from 1976, Polaroid photographs, a Monroe Fire Department badge, Bicentennial memorabilia, and a large hand-drawn illustration resembling a map of the United States. While much of the material was waterlogged, many in attendance expressed hope that at least some of the items could be preserved or restored.

The event also hosted residents who remembered the original burial ceremony in 1976.

Looking ahead, the mayor announced that photographs and memories from this year’s ceremony will be placed into a new time capsule, continuing the tradition for future generations to open decades from now.
