$36.6 Million Thruway Resurfacing Project Completed
By Y.M. Lowy
The New York State Thruway Authority has finished a $36.6 million pavement improvement project on I-87, covering the stretch from Woodbury near Exit 16 to Newburgh at Exit 17. The work included repairs on about 48 lane miles and a two-inch asphalt overlay for a smoother ride.
The project also added safety upgrades such as new guiderail, reflective line striping, and better drainage and culverts. Much of the roadway base dates back to the 1950s, making reconstruction and maintenance essential.
About 53,000 motorists use this part of I-87 every day in both directions..
Drivers are reminded to follow work zone safety rules, slow down, and move over for vehicles stopped on the side of the road under the state’s Move Over Law.
